Les Lane: Resident Sommelier	2000 Chateau de Montmirail "Cuvee de l'Ermite" Vacqueyras During a late February wine tasting at a local restaurant, I had the privilege of trying 29 wines, mainly from the Rhone region of France. As usual, we started with whites and worked our way through to the heavier reds. As the tasting progressed I tried some pleasing wines, but nothing that really hit the WOW factor. I was deep in the Rhone region by now, looking for that elusive wine. A 2000 Vacqueyras from Chateau de Montmirail was next, a deep dark concentrated red in the glass, this one had some promise. It had the earthy musky aromas that Rhone's are known for. The fruit was big and lush on the palate with nice medium lingering tannins on the finish. This was a full-blown monster Rhone that needed a second taste. I immediately asked the wine rep how many cases he has available. His reply was 5 cases. SOLD!! I said. Stephen Tanzer tasted this wine in late 2002 and said it was still a bit tight. He rated it an 88+. Well in February of 2005 this wine is no longer tight. I think he realized that the wine had the potential to improve with age, thus the plus rating.
